About the central activity of the Library
The central activity of the Library is its participation in the development of library and information activity in Serbia, coordination of the network of libraries, assistance in work organization, suggestion of ideas for improving libraries’ activities and permanent professional development of librarians.
The network of libraries
As early as 1974, by the Statute of the University of Belgrade, the University Library was declared a parent library for all libraries within the University of Belgrade. Over time, this activity included other libraries, so today the University Library “Svetozar Markovic” is the parent library for 4 university libraries, 154 higher education libraries and 83 libraries in scientific institutes and institutions located in different parts of the city of Belgrade and various regions in Serbia such as Macva, Kolubara, Podunavlje, Branicevo, Sumadija, Pomoravlje, Bor, Zajecar, Zlatibor, Moravica, Raska, Rasina, Nisava, Toplica, Pirot, Jablanica and Pcinja (Law on Library and Information Activity).
Central register
The University Library collects data on a yearly basis on the existing and newly founded libraries (information about space, equipment, collections, users, funding, staff etc.) and then inserts them into the Central Register of Serbian Libraries with the aim of recording and researching the library activity.
